Vue 3 to React Migration: A Clear-Eyed Cost-Benefit Analysis
Most migration debates devolve into framework tribalism. This isn’t that. It’s a hard look at what you actually gain—and give up—when you move a Vue 3 codebase to React.

Why Teams Even Consider This
Vue 3 is a genuinely good framework. The Composition API closed most of the ergonomic gap with React Hooks. Single File Components are arguably more readable. The learning curve is gentler.
So why do teams migrate? Usually one of:
- Hiring: React engineers are more abundant in most markets
- Ecosystem: Certain libraries only have first-class React support (Radix, shadcn/ui, etc.)
- React Native: The team wants to share logic with a mobile app
- Org standardization: An acquisition, a reorg, a “we need one stack” mandate
Notice none of these are “Vue 3 is technically worse.” That matters for the analysis.
The Costs Are Higher Than You Think
1. It’s a Full Rewrite
Vue SFCs don’t map cleanly to React components. The template syntax, directives (v-if, v-for, v-model), and the options object structure all need to be manually translated. Even with the Composition API, the mental model differences are enough that you can’t automate this reliably.
A 50k-line Vue 3 codebase is a 50k-line rewrite. Budget accordingly.
2. The Reactivity Model Shift Is Non-Trivial
Vue’s reactivity is automatic and proxy-based. React’s is explicit and pull-based. Engineers fluent in Vue will write bugs in React—they’ll mutate state directly, miss dependency arrays in useEffect, or over-fetch on every render because they didn’t memoize. The fix isn’t documentation; it’s months of calibration.
3. Your Component Library Probably Doesn’t Transfer
If you’re on Vuetify, PrimeVue, or Quasar, you’re not “migrating” those—you’re replacing them. That means new design decisions, new accessibility audits, and new edge cases in components you thought were solved.
4. Tests Rewritten, Not Ported
Vue Testing Library and React Testing Library share the same philosophy but differ enough in API that your test suite needs rewriting too. That’s not just time—that’s a window where coverage drops and regressions slip through.
The Benefits, Honestly Assessed
Ecosystem Breadth
React’s npm ecosystem is larger by a significant margin. More importantly, new UI primitives (headless component libraries, animation libraries, form solutions) often ship React-first and Vue-later—if ever. If your product is UI-heavy and fast-moving, this matters.
Hiring Pool
In most cities and most remote markets, React engineers outnumber Vue engineers. If you’re scaling a team, the recruiting friction is real and the React pool is deeper. This is one of the few benefits that compounds over time.
React Native Leverage
If mobile is on the roadmap and you want shared business logic, React + React Native is a real advantage. Vue has Ionic and NativeScript, but neither matches the investment level of React Native. For teams serious about mobile, this can be the decisive factor.
Long-Term Organizational Alignment
If the rest of your org (other products, other teams, your design system team) is React, then Vue in isolation has a maintenance tax. Shared components, shared patterns, shared knowledge—these require a shared stack.
When Migration Doesn’t Make Sense
- Working product, no major new surface area: If your Vue app is in maintenance mode and the team knows it well, migration destroys value for no gain
- Small team, tight deadlines: Rewrite risk is inversely proportional to team size and runway
- Vue 3 Composition API already adopted: You’ve already taken the modernization step; React isn’t meaningfully better for your use case
- No concrete hiring or ecosystem blocker: “React is more popular” isn’t a migration reason if your existing team is productive
When Migration Does Make Sense
- You’re building a new major version anyway (sunset old app, build new)
- React Native mobile is a near-term requirement
- You’re joining a React-standardized org and maintaining two stacks has real cost
- You can’t hire Vue engineers in your market and you’re actively blocked on headcount
A Framework for the Decision
Before greenlighting a migration, answer these five questions honestly:
- What specific problem does React solve that Vue 3 doesn’t? (If the answer is vague, stop here)
- What’s the estimated rewrite cost in eng-weeks? (Then double it)
- What’s the opportunity cost? (What features don’t ship during the migration?)
- Does your team have React depth, or are you buying a second learning curve?
- Is the benefit ongoing or one-time? (Hiring pool = ongoing; “we want to try it” = one-time at best)
If questions 1–3 don’t produce a clear ROI and questions 4–5 don’t show durable value, the migration is a distraction dressed as an improvement.
What I’d Actually Do
If the trigger is hiring or org standardization: migrate in phases. New features in React. Gradual strangler-fig approach on the existing Vue surfaces. Don’t rewrite the whole app in a quarter.
If the trigger is React Native: evaluate whether a shared logic layer (pure TS/business logic extracted from both Vue and React) serves you better than a full migration.
If there’s no clear trigger: don’t migrate. Vue 3 is a production-ready, well-maintained framework with a healthy ecosystem. Migrating because React is “the standard” is how teams burn quarters without shipping anything.
The migration conversation is worth having. Just have it with real numbers, not framework preferences.
